Snow to the North

There is a decent system setting up to the north that the NWS gives a 20% chance of impacting the metro.

There are no watches yet anywhere near the metro but it seemed worth a thread.

Enjoy!

  1. I'm not entirely sure where the NWS is getting the idea the heavy snow is going to be up near Duluth. Euro, Canadian and GFS place it right over or near MSP.

I agree Anonymous @ 2:47. However, I just noticed the new forecast discussion came out a short time ago from the NWS and it talks about the highest accumulating snow looks like it could be across the heart of the metro with 4-7 inches. They also talked about this being handled with a Winter Weather Advisory vs. a Winter Storm Watch.

What does this all say to me? Once again, Novak is going to be right. He had/had MSP in the snow area and talked about the NWS probably issuing a Winter Weather Advisory at some point. It certainly looks that King Novak is reigning the thrown once again. We will see.

Just amazing how far apart the short-term and long-term models are with only 24 hours to go until the onset of precip. And it looks like the long-term might be right here which is opposite of what is typically the case. So interesting.

This is what make predicting and watching the weather so darn fascinating!!!

    Bring it!

  3. So wait, are you folks talking Sunday night/Monday? Why is NOAA still putting out mostly rain/slush and so little snow? And what about hints, hints, hints of something mega next weekend? I didn't check Novak yet, today. I better go check it out. Keep the analyses coming, snow lovers. Thanks for the updates and new thread.

  4. Okay: Novak does say 'bust potential is high' ... but yes, he does have the metro in a decent 4-6" snow band. Let it SNOW!

  5. In today's Strib, Paul Douglas says we need 13.6 inches to get into the 'top five' snowiest winters.

    1. Think bigger @WeatherGeek!
We need 27” for top spot….it starts tonight!!
God I wish for once a GFS model solution would verify….it’s shows over 2’ again for the later in the week event, hopefully we get at least half that…another foot plus storm would definitely help the cause!
      LETS GO!!

    2. Okay, Bigdaddy! I will set the measuring stick higher. This snow band moving through right now.... impressive, wasn't it? I loved watching it; it seems to have calmed down a bit, now. Let's go for the gold, yes. And if this storm Th/Fri materializes, that will definitely get us closer to that 27" you want for the top spot. I look forward to everyone's predictions/computer model reports.

Wow, that was an intense band that just went through the heart of the metro! There seems to be another nice bacn coming from the south. It if keeps filling in, this will give us the 3-5 that is now being predicting by the NWS.

Again, this might be a nice appetizer to the late week situation.

    Bring it! All of it!

  7. Tonight’s snow has been a pleasant surprise, but my WxUnderground point forecast has about 9-11” for Wed night through Friday! That system should be touching shore tomorrow sometime.

I don’t have access to all the various model data. Are they in agreement for the Wed-Fri system?

    1. Mostly in agreement but we should have a much better idea when the storm comes ashore. Just for fun I'd say a solid 6-12 inches looks likely but that could change in one model run ha ha. Based on GFS model the jet stream looks real good for a classic March snow storm. Nothing historic but heavy wet sloppy snow is on the table.

  8. The snow is just absolutely coming down in the west metro right now…easily closing in on 4”!

  9. Snow is like a rock out there!

  10. 6.6 at NWS Chanhassen. Too bad THEY aren't the official record keeper of snow in the metro because I only see 2.8 listed for MSP airport. Let's see what we can squeeze out prior to the next potential 'big event' Th/Fri!!

  11. And..... Chan has had over 82 inches of white stuff this season, but the one that 'counts' is MSP airport and they are at 74.2 right now. Let it SNOW!

  12. I agree WeatherGeek, too bad Chanhassen isn't the official recording station. Looks like an official 3.3 inches at MSP. The southwestern and western burbs got the jackpot with 5-7. Solid 6 inches here in Plymouth/Maple Grove. Goin' skiing after work this afternoon! With everything coated in a thick blanket of fresh white, it's a winter wonderland out there! Looking forward to adding hopefully lots more to our season total later this week as we inch (yes, pun intended! lol) closer to the record! As many of you have said, "Let's go for the Gold!"

    1. Yes count me in as well with wishing that we went back to the NWS site being the official measurement site, but we’ll argue that at a later date we have a record to break that we’re inching towards.
3.3” MSP total from last night(5” in my yard btw)…new total is 74.7”, which puts us now at 13th snowiest of all time!
We stand at exactly 24” to break the record, some models are showing that number for the Thursday to Saturday system later this week, let’s see what happens…but damn let’s break a record!

  13. In regard to last night's snowfall, I give kudos to Novak, the Euro, GFS and surprisingly Kare 11, for making the call of several inches of snow way ahead of everyone else, many of whom were calling for all rain or a mix.

  14. What are people with access to the 'models' see for Thursday/Friday? "Anticipation" And yes to all the comments above from Schnee Meister (have fun skiing) and Bigdaddy.
