Let's Talk Weather Apps

I've volunteered to help a weather colleague gather a bit of feedback regarding weather apps. I know this post is a bit out of the ordinary but if you have a moment or two to provide a comment or two, I'd be most appreciative.

Three questions:
1) Do you use weather apps? If so, which ones do you use?
2) How have you learned about the weather apps that you use? How do you become aware of weather apps in general?
3) How would you classify yourself: very casual weather person, weather enthusiast, weather pro, etc?

Thanks for your help!

  1. pykl3 radar, as well as radarscope are both great radar apps. Neither are free, but for those who love tracking in storms, or those who are on the road a lot and need to keep track, it works great.

  2. Radarscope and MyCast are a couple favs along with iDamage. I talked with other weather geeks and tried a few before settling on these. I am an amateur enthusiast.

  4. I do not have a smartphone or even a cell phone, so count me out.

Also, Ian Lenord was probably looking at the NOGPAS. The NOGPAS had shifted the snowband further north and placed it directly over the metro.

    1. That's correct, although I think there might be services through F5 data or Allison House that may link up with Radarscope, and that provides that data. I am not 100% on this though.

  9. Radarscope of the Mac is fantastic thanks to more screen space.

  10. iPhone/iPad (of course) .. eWeather HD (I like how it uses the badge to display the current temp and has intelicast and foreca forecasts you can compare easily)

I like weatherbug for seeing radar activity.

The built-in iPhone weather app is good and clean for just seeing forecasts for current location and other areas (nice for travel etc.)

I use Live Dock Weather on the Mac because I like how it gives a weather "widget" without having to go to the dashboard.

  11. 1. Weather channel and accuweather.

  12. I bought an Android Smartphone last year so I could track weather quicker and easier!
    1) I use WeatherBug and RadarNow for radar. I use StormChaseBuddy in the summertime to listen to spotter radio. I just downloaded SimpleWeatherAlert last week for alerts only, and it seems to be solid. I can pick and choose how I want to be alerted based on the severity of the Alert. (ie. I don't need to get rocked out of bed with lights and vibrate for a Wind Chill Advisory, but I do want the lights/vibrate when a Blizzard Warning is issued.)
    2) I've been testing them out pretty regularly since I got the phone. I've only purchased one app (Storm Chase Buddy), because the other apps are free and seem to work just fine.
    3) I'm going to steal Todd's description above and also call myself an "amateur enthusiast"!

  13. Somebody is going to get nailed with heavy snow come Sunday into monday, and Sombody is going to get hit with the freezing rain. The CPC places the heavist band of snow just north of the metro, and the freezing rain band into Iowa-Illinois-Sothern Wisconsin, It will be worth watching.

    1. @Bemaki. Thanks... I'm going to copy and paste this into the other post as I'm hoping to keep this one "clean" with only weather app comments.
